Interconnection Studies
Dynamic model development, PSCAD modeling, and support for utility and ISO interconnection requirements
Interconnecting a generating facility or large load to the bulk electric system requires accurate dynamic models, documentation that meets utility and ISO requirements, and engineering support through a process that is rarely straightforward. TWC provides interconnection modeling and study support for synchronous generators, renewable resources, and large loads connecting to the North American grid.
Synchronous Dynamic Model Development and Conversion
Interconnection studies require dynamic models that accurately represent how a generating unit responds to system disturbances. For synchronous generators, TWC develops and converts dynamic models in the formats required by the applicable transmission planner or ISO, and supports model verification against field data to meet NERC MOD standard requirements.
- Generator, exciter, governor, and PSS model development
- Model format conversion between planning tools
- MOD-026 and MOD-027 model verification support
Renewable Model Development in PSSe and PSLF
Renewable generating facilities (solar, wind, and battery storage) require both generic and user-defined dynamic models for interconnection and planning studies. TWC develops these models in GE PSLF and Siemens PSSe, working with manufacturer-provided data and field test results to produce models that meet planning study submission requirements.
- Generic model development and parameterization (REGC, REEC, REPC)
- User-defined model (UDM) development and integration
- Model quality testing and submission support
User-Defined Model Development in PSCAD
Electromagnetic transient (EMT) modeling in PSCAD is increasingly required for IBR interconnections, particularly for facilities connecting to weak grids or in areas with high IBR penetration. TWC develops user-defined PSCAD models of inverter-based resources and supports development and parameterization of plant models.
- IBR PSCAD facility model development from manufacturer blackbox models
- Engineering support with OEMs for EMT model parameterization and documentation
- EMT model benchmarking against generic and user-defined positive-sequence models
Large Load Modeling
Large industrial loads and data centers connecting at transmission voltage have interconnection study requirements similar to generators. TWC provides modeling support for large load interconnections, including load model development, steady-state analysis, and support for utility study requirements.
- Load model development for planning study submission
- Steady-state and dynamic analysis support
- ISO and utility question and data request support
Utility and ISO Study Support
Generator interconnection processes involve ongoing data requests, study comment periods, and technical exchanges with the transmission owner/operator and the ISO. These interactions often require familiarity with the interconnection process, the applicable requirements, and a technical understanding of the study results. TWC supports generator owners and developers in responding to utility and ISO inquiries, reviewing study results, and supporting the interconnection process from initial application through commercial operation.
- Review and respond to interconnection study results
- Data request support and communication with OEMs on behalf of the owner
- Model response and modification following ISO model denial
- Post-COD compliance engineering and model updates
